In the request for information, school administrators were asked to classify the reasons for challenges to books into one or more pre-defined categories as follows: (Numbers in parentheses reflect the number of challenges for that reason)

  • Profanity/Inappropriate language (73)
  • Sexual Content (60)
  • Mysticism/Paganism (75)
  • Violence/Horror (61)
  • Other (32) Some explanations given in this category are "lack of literary value", "insubordination and disrespect of protagonist", "religious content", "racism", "too mature for grade level", "non-biblical story of creation", "homosexual content", "drug references", "gangs", "talks about learning to smoke", "crime", "teaches evolution", and "promotes agenda for women, blacks, and latinos."

Statewide, 218 challenges were issued to 134 books. Results of challenges have been categorized as follows:

Note: Banned books are those physically removed from a library. Restricted books remain in the library but can't be accessed by all students. Some restrictions are so severe as to be tantamount to banning.
